Midsummer is a holiday celebrated in connection to the summer solstice – the time of the year when the sun on these northern degrees does not fall below the horizon during night time.

Midsummer is one of the most important holidays of the year in Sweden and a time for family and friends to gather. Apart from the traditional midsummer meal – with for example new potatoes, pickled herring and the first strawberries of the season – a big part of the celebration revolves around the raising and dancing round the maypole.

Since Midsummer during pagan years was thought to be the time of the year when magic was the strongest, the holiday is full of different rituals. One of the most popular Midsummer rituals is to pick seven different flowers and put them under the pillow. You will then, according to tradition, dream about your future spouse.
